Canon's trademarked MicroFine Droplet technology ably provides 49 gradation levels for crisp, clean black-and-white or color prints at 2,400 x 1,200 dpi on a wide variety of media, including plain paper, banner paper, envelopes, glossy photo cards, and more. You can print an 8-by-10-inch color photo on plain paper in under two minutes, and a 4-by-6-inch in about one minute, both in photo quality. When the onscreen message warns you that ink levels are low, just drop in the single color cartridge you need.
Designed as a compact and quiet printer for users seeking high-quality photo printing, the S800 also enables you to transfer photos from your digital camera to your computer through the CompactFlash card reader. Previously, I was using an HP model that I thought gave good results. However, there was no comparison to the quality of the output of the Canon. Seeing the same prints side by side from the two printers convinced me that I made a wise purchase. The Canon 4 x 6 and 8 x 10 prints really look as if they came from film that was professionally developed and processed.I have used several different brands of paper with the S800 and I am impressed with all of them (Canon, Kodak, Jet Print). The non-Canon papers do require some driver tweaking but that proved to be not a big deal. The S800 prints relatively quickly and is one of the quietest photo printers available (good if your spouse is trying to sleep). No more replacing an entire tri-color cartridge when one color in it runs out; only one color in one cartridge! The amount of ink in each tank is generous; it's easy to see the ink levels at a glance, and you can access the print monitor installed on your system to see the levels on your screen without having to open the front panel.
